Donna Huneke, Watercolorist
The Evolution of a Children's Book
************************************************************
"The Funny Monkey Meets Santa Claus" began as an idea to record the family stories which had been created and recited to our young members.
The first step was to divide the story into units or pages and to do rough sketches of the characters and the action.
The backgrounds were painted first. I used watercolor to capture a soft, faded, dream-like image.
I then drew the figures onto clear plastic and painted them with acrylics. I wanted the characters to be darker and to stand out from the backgrounds.
The painted cells were then placed on to the appropriate background and copied.
At this point, I assembled the pages into book form and forwarded it to publishers, none of whom were interested in the proposal. I researched the process of self-publishing, promotion and marketing. Ultimately, that is how I brought "The Funny Monkey Meets Santa Claus" to print. This project was accomplished with the help of many special people:
*Edward Huneke, Sr. who imagined and shared the stories.
*Angela Huneke who recalled and wrote down the tales.
*Joseph Huneke who edited the text and suggested the movements of the characters.
*Dennis Huneke who established the publishing company.
*Michael Thomas Mink who did the graphic layout and offered encouragement.
*Keith Hadler of Hadler Printing who printed and assembled our book.
*Family and friends who encouraged and supported me.
